Now remember, this is not me saying this. It’s God. Global warming, as seen as a threat to life on earth and the planet’s continued existence, is a hoax. Or at least incorrect. A hoax is a claim perpetrated by someone who knows it isn’t true. Unfortunately, I think most people actually believe this one. But I’m not writing to give a political discussion. (I think it is, entirely, a political fabrication). If you don’t agree with me, however, read on. Maybe you will agree with God.
2 Peter 3: 5-7
5For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
The Bible says that God is preserving the universe by His word. Is God stressed out about greenhouse gases? Is “climate change”, caused by man, going to throw God’s entire plan for history out of the window?
Let’s say I accept global warming as fact (I don’t). But let’s say I do. According to this passage, it doesn’t matter anyway! God is in control. Not Al Gore. But to accept this precept requires accepting God’s Word as truth. Not everyone is willing to do that, I understand. But for the Christian, scientist or not, it cannot be taken any other way: Man is not going to destroy the world through his actions. It is contrary to God’s Word. God’s judgement will bring fire and destruction to the earth. And He is keeping the earth in balance until that time.
What is your take on this passage and its application?
I have lots of opinions. 🙂
I don’t expect that global climate change will destroy the world any more than pollution did/does–or that the BP release will destroy the Gulf of Mexico. But it can certainly mess things up for some.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. It reduces the heat loss from the earth to the “black body” of space. This means that more energy stays here–and that means the temperature increases. I have serious doubts about the models that are used to forecast but I have no idea which way they are wrong. They can predict the amount of energy that is retained relatively accurately, but I suspect (with no data) that there is a lot of uncertainty about what this will do–and some of the effects are not yet known.
But we are doing the experiment and we are not going to stop. Even if the US does cut back on its emissions of carbon dioxide, others will not. Our efforts will slow the time it takes for the carbon dioxide levels to reach some level by only a few years. Any time we burn “stored fuels” (natural gas, oil, and coal) we will add to the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. Any time we burn something that grew “in our lifetime” we have a net zero effect. If we capture and “store” carbon dioxide, we reduce the amount going into the atmosphere–compared to what it would be without the capture.
I am curious, but not optimistic.
Thanks Marc for that reminder of what God’s Word has to say on all of this. I am certainly no fan of pollution and the destructive way man treats the Creation, but you brought a good reminder to not think too highly of ourselves and our ability to cripple this earth irredeemably. We can’t speed up the judgment.
